Male Archetype Test is a free, confidential 24-question self-assessment, informed by Moore and Gillette’s archetype model. It takes about 6 minutes, runs entirely in your browser, and gives you a plain-language profile of your strongest style plus an optional in-depth report. It is an educational screening, not a diagnosis.

Four patterns you can use, without having to become a type

Responsibility, purposeful action, understanding, and connection can coexist in one person. This reflection makes room for all four while keeping symbolic stories separate from established personality measurement. If you searched for a male type test or a men personality test, this is a reflection on four symbolic patterns, not a trait inventory.

4

A profile across four patterns

Six questions explore each archetype: King as stewardship, Warrior as disciplined action, Magician as understanding, and Lover as connection and appreciation. You see every score rather than receiving only a flattering identity. A quieter pattern can suggest an experiment, but it cannot establish a deficit.

24

Ordinary actions, original wording

The items ask about choices such as taking responsibility, following a practice routine, examining a problem, and making room for enjoyment. They do not borrow a commercial questionnaire or test how tough, dominant, attractive, or successful you are. Answer from recent adult life instead of an idealized version of yourself.

2

Two shadow directions in context

Each leading-pattern interpretation describes both an overused and an underused form from the model. These are reflection prompts, not separate scores or hidden findings about you. A strong archetype score reflects endorsement of its constructive behaviors; it does not show that either shadow is present.

The 4 patterns this test measures

  • King: Responsibility, fair decisions, and creating room for others.
  • Warrior: Focused effort, clear limits, and action that serves a purpose.
  • Magician: Careful inquiry, useful insight, and sharing understanding.
  • Lover: Connection, appreciation, and attention to the felt quality of life.

If nothing is endorsed, every pattern scores the same, or the leading patterns tie, the result says so instead of naming a single pattern.

The eight shadow poles across the four archetypes

Moore and Gillette describe two shadow poles for each mature archetype, and seeing all eight together can make the individual interpretations easier to place. King has the Tyrant, who uses control to protect status, and the Weakling, who avoids responsibility when a decision feels risky. Warrior has the Sadist, who turns force against other people, and the Masochist, who accepts needless suffering as if it were strength. Magician has the Detached Manipulator, who withholds or bends knowledge for advantage, and the Denying Innocent, who avoids owning what they know or the effect they have. Lover has the Addicted Lover, who chases intensity without limits, and the Impotent Lover, who feels cut off from vitality and connection.

None of these eight labels is a diagnosis, and this questionnaire does not score any of them directly. They are literary shorthand from the source book for a pattern that has become one-sided, not clinical findings about you or anyone else. If a shadow description matches a specific, repeated behavior rather than an occasional mood, that is worth examining honestly, ideally with a real example in mind rather than the label alone.

Signs it might be time to talk to a professional

Most of the patterns this page describes are ordinary and do not need intervention. A few signals are worth taking seriously on their own, regardless of which archetype leads your profile: a pattern that has cost you a relationship, a job, or your health, one that keeps recurring despite repeated attempts to change it, or one that people close to you have independently raised more than once.

You do not need a settled explanation before you reach out. Describe one or two concrete recent situations, how long the pattern has been present, and what you have already tried, and let a professional help you sort out which parts deserve attention. The Psychology.com therapist directory can help you find a licensed professional who works with men on responsibility, connection, and related relationship patterns. If you are also wondering female archetype test, the goddess-inspired version explores seven patterns any adult can take. For twelve narrative patterns rather than mythic ones, the archetype test scores Hero, Sage, Explorer, and nine others independently. To see which masculine norms you hold most rigidly, rather than which archetype fits, take the toxic masculinity test.

Is this a male personality test?

A male personality test in the trait sense is not what this page offers, even though many people arrive here looking for one. It is a 24-question reflection on four symbolic patterns from Moore and Gillette's King, Warrior, Magician, Lover, with six original items per archetype and no borrowed commercial questionnaire. The questions ask about what you do, such as taking responsibility, keeping a practice routine, examining a problem, and making room for enjoyment, not how tough, dominant, attractive, or successful you are. If you want a male personality types test built on established, continuous traits, the Big Five Personality Test is the better tool; this one keeps symbolic stories separate from personality measurement.

Methodology & sources

This independent questionnaire is informed by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette’s King, Warrior, Magician, Lover (1990). Their four archetypes provide a narrative vocabulary, not an established four-factor personality instrument. We wrote 24 original items, six per archetype, rated from 0 to 4. Each sum ranges from 0 to 24 and becomes a rounded percentage of its own maximum. These are our educational item groupings, not validated subscales. The highest displayed percentage supplies the leading interpretation; a tie is displayed in definition order and has no psychological significance. Close bars deserve equal attention. A percentage describes your answers, not how much of your personality consists of that archetype.

The questionnaire is unvalidated and is offered as educational screening for adult self-reflection, not diagnosis. We do not infer biological differences, measure masculinity, establish maturity, or score the eight shadow poles. We describe those poles as concepts from the source model, using plain, non-shaming explanations. Low overall endorsement can mean the wording does not fit your circumstances; even then the engine displays a leading bar, so that label should be held lightly. Unlike a trait inventory, this framework has no population norms or clinical cutoffs. If you want a different lens, the Big Five personality test describes continuous traits and the Personal Values Test explores priorities. Neither should be used as proof that you are living correctly.

Male Archetype Test FAQ

What are the four male archetypes?

In Moore and Gillette’s model, King concerns stewardship, Warrior purposeful effort, Magician understanding, and Lover connection with life. The names describe symbolic patterns, not occupations or ranks. You might express responsibility in a family, discipline in a hobby, curiosity at work, and warmth with friends, all during the same week.

Is this a scientific masculinity test?

No. These original questions have not undergone psychometric validation, and the archetypes are a narrative theory. The result does not measure hormones, gender, maturity, or suitability for a relationship. For a continuous trait framework, explore the Big Five test or the fuller Personality Test.

Can adults of any gender take this?

Yes. The title reflects the source book and common search language. Care, resolve, curiosity, and responsibility do not belong to one gender. Adults aged 18 and older can use any pattern that feels useful. The Female Archetype Test and broader Archetype Test offer other symbolic vocabularies, not competing standards.

Does a high score reveal my shadow?

No. We ask about constructive expressions of each pattern. The shadow descriptions are possibilities for reflection, not measured findings. A high King score does not mean you are controlling, and a low Warrior score does not mean you accept mistreatment. Ask whether a specific behavior actually occurs before applying any interpretation.

What if my results are tied or change?

Treat a tie as a shared emphasis. The engine chooses one heading for display, but it cannot settle your identity. Roles, opportunity, and recent experiences affect answers. Consider which patterns you use by choice and which your circumstances demand, then compare concrete examples rather than repeatedly taking the test to obtain a preferred name.

Is this free, and what happens to my answers?

The on-page result is free and does not require an account. Scoring happens in your browser, and answers are retained in this tab’s session storage to restore a result after checkout. Usage events do not contain answers or scores. Requesting the PDF summary submits your name, email, and summary scores; purchasing an optional report submits summary scores. These optional actions are separate from completing the test.

How do I find out what male archetype I am?

To answer "what male archetype am I," the test scores all four patterns separately, King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover, as a percentage of each scale maximum, and the highest bar supplies your leading interpretation. Similar bars mean a mixed profile, which is common, and a tie follows display order with no psychological significance. Read the quieter patterns too: a low bar suggests an experiment to try, not a deficit.

Is this the King Warrior Magician Lover test from the book?

This king warrior magician lover test is informed by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette's 1990 book, but the 24 items are original, written for this page, six per archetype and rated 0 to 4. The book offers a narrative vocabulary rather than an established four-factor personality instrument, so the questionnaire has not been validated and is offered as educational screening for adult self-reflection, not diagnosis. The eight shadow poles are explained but never scored.
